In 1973, on that iconic first Sunday in May, a roaring crowd of 134,476 fans watched Secretariat gather momentum as he came from last place to rocket across the wire, winning the 1 and ¼ mile classic race by two and a half lengths in track record time of 1:59 2/5. The race was not short on competition as the talented field included a determined rival whose second place finish would have also broken the existing record. Secretariat’s dramatic victory set the stage for what would become one of the great feats in all of sport.
