Walter Johnson | T-206 Baseball Greats Series | 1oz Silver Bar
The T-206 baseball cards (1909–1911) are among the most iconic and collectible in the hobby. Known as the "White Border" set, they feature 524 lithographic portraits of major and minor league players, distributed by tobacco brands. These cards are prized for their detailed artwork, historical significance, and variations in print runs and back designs. The set remains highly sought after, featuring baseball greats such as Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson.
Born the son of a farmer in Humboldt, Kansas, November 6, 1887, Walter Johnson debuted in the majors a short 20 years later. In only his second season, he had earned one of the most well known names in baseball, “The Big Train.” With a career record of 417-279, Johnson finished his 21 year career second all-time in wins, and 12th in ERA at 2.17. This included an astounding 531 complete games, with a record 38 in 1910. Along the way he racked up 3,509 strikeouts, and is still ranked in the top ten all-time.
As out of reach as those numbers appear, here’s one that certainly is. In 1908 he actually started three consecutive games. As unheard of as that would be today, consider those were three straight shutouts.
Near the end of his illustrious career in 1924, he was able to lead the only team he ever played for to their first World Championship.
